Walter Goodwin Smith, 85, of Bridgewater, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Saturday August 25th. He was the beloved husband of 61years to Anita V. (Ohman) Smith.

He was born in Flint, MI., son of the late Warren M. and Flora M. (Green) Smith. Walter was brought up in Whitman and was educated in Whitman Schools.

Walter served his country in the United States Navy as a Gunner’s Mate Third during WWIl from 1945-1949.

He was a self-employed Auto Reconditioner.

Before his illness Walter enjoyed, bicycling, fishing, boating and camping. Walter was a member of the Tri County Beagle Club.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Linda Erskine and her husband Steve of Georgia, David Smith and his wife Nancy of Maine, Christine Korske and her husband Lawrence of Maine and Edward Smith and his partner Dianne Loftus of Middleboro, as well as many step grandchildren and great grandchildren, his nephews Daniel Smith of Abington and Richard Smith of Rockland. He was also the brother of the late Robert G. Smith.

His services will be held on Wednesday August 29th at 11:00AM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth St. (RT58 at the Rotary Circle) Whitman. Visitation will be held one hour prior to his service from 10:00-11:00AM. Burial will be on Thursday August 30th in the MA VA National Cemetery, Bourne, MA at 11:15AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Old Colony Hospice, One Credit Union Way, Randolph, MA 02368.
